The Power of Words
“Be impeccable with your word”
One of the featured agreements in Don Miguel Ruiz’s book “The Four Agreements”
Words hold immense power, and carry energy as they are released, and absorbed.
The way we speak to ourselves, determines how we speak to others.
The way we speak to others affects their tone in their next interaction.
Words can be up-lifting. They can make you blush, smile, feel inspired, motivated, loved. They can be used for feedback to support your best self. They can be used to share stories that allow for connection and honor the past. Words can be used to express our truth. How we need help. How we feel. Who we are. Words can be used for good.
But words can also be cutting. They can hurt. They can make you cry, they can make you feel small. Gossip can spread untrue rumors or hurtful remarks. words can get thrown around without any thought at all.
One person’s words can erase your belief in yourself. They can erase a moment of confidence, make you feel alone, and they can seep into your mind and your subconscious and linger there…
*Only if you allow them to*
if you believe them.
If you let someone, other than yourself, try to define your truth.
And how do we decide what is true?
Does someone outside of your mind body and soul know you better? Do you believe this person is better than you, therefore they must be right? Do you believe everything you hear?
…Should we dismiss words just because they do not feel good?
NO. we dismiss the way the words make us feel. We remember our intention and our truth, and we ask if they came from a place of love. We remember who we are. What we stand for, and the love we have for ourselves. We remember that everyone is hurting, that everyone feels pain and that pain is desperately seeking a place to go to get OUTSIDE of our bodies and minds. And a lot of times it is with words, that we sharply, quickly, sometimes unknowingly pass along pain.
When we remember who we are, and what we stand for, it makes it easier to see that these evil words are not meant for us. We do not take these words personally, we let these words bounce off of the bubble of love we have surrounded ourselves with.
Reminder to self:
Be impeccable with your word.
Quotes from The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz:
“The word is your power of creation, and that power can be used in more than one direction. One direction is impeccability, where the word creates a beautiful story — your personal heaven on earth. The other direction is misuse of the word, where the word destroys everything around you, and creates your personal hell.”
“Impeccability of the word is so important because the word is you, the messenger. The word is all about the message you deliver, not just to everyone and everything around you, but the message you deliver to yourself.”
“Be impeccable with your word really means never use the power of the word against yourself. When you’re impeccable with your word, you never betray yourself. You never use the word to gossip about yourself or to spread emotional poison by gossiping about other people.”
